Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal reduces hair growth by targeting the pigment in the follicle with light energy. It works across most areas of the body, and appointments run anywhere from about fifteen minutes for a small area like underarms up to an hour for larger areas such as legs. It takes a course of sessions, not one.

Hair grows in cycles, and laser only affects follicles that are in the active growth phase at the moment of treatment. That is the entire reason a single session cannot finish the job, and it is why anyone promising you permanent results in one visit is not being straight with you.

A realistic plan is a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, with the interval depending on the area — face cycles faster than legs. Most people see meaningful thinning partway through the series rather than at the end.

Unlike waxing, you do not need to grow the hair out beforehand. You shave before the appointment; the laser needs the pigment below the surface, not above it.

Questions people ask

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the area, your hair colour and thickness, and your skin tone. A series of sessions spaced weeks apart is the norm rather than the exception, and some areas — particularly hormonally driven facial hair — need ongoing maintenance. I would rather set that expectation honestly at the start than have you disappointed at session three.

Does laser work on every hair colour?

No, and this is worth knowing before you book. Laser targets pigment, so it works best on hair with real colour in it. Grey, white and very fine blonde hair carry little pigment and respond poorly. If that is your situation, electrolysis is the treatment that actually works — I do that too, through my other practice.

What do I need to do before my appointment?

Shave the area beforehand and avoid sun exposure and tanning in the run-up. Do not wax, pluck or thread the area between sessions — those remove the follicle target the laser needs. I will give you the full list when you book.
